VELMA MORRIS

Velma J. Morris has been making art since she was a little girl and exhibiting annually since 1966. Primarily self-taught, she was the first African-American to be offered a Women’s Art Club presidency in both 1994 and 1995, a position she declined due to family, art and career responsibilities. Morris was also the first African-American female artist to receive a solo exhibition in 1995 at Closson’s Art Gallery in Cincinnati.

Ms. Morris is an award winning artist and member of the Women’s Art Club of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Art Club. She was taught for years at the Baker Hunt Art and Cultural Center in Northern Kentucky. Velma is a master of versatility in her use of color and painting style. Her paintings “capture the moment” leaving the viewers readily able to understand the place and mood of her subjects.
